I downloaded Windows Server Essentials evaluation yesterday, and tried installing it, but the installation won’t let me proceed, because the product key that is on the evaluation center for the download is invalid. I did notice the key listed on the download site happens to be identical to the key listed for essentials.

I ran into the same problem two days ago 12 October and reported it via the „Site Feedback“ link at the bottom of the TechNet Evaluation Center page.

In that message, I also mentioned that the key they have posted is the one for Server R2 Essentials. I have yet to receive a reply.

The poster removed the key from that post, but didn’t seem to be able to do much else. Unless you guys know who to contact among the myriad of options available under the „Contact Us“ link, I’m not sure how to proceed from here. Downloaded the Server Essentials evaluation on Oct 13, and tried to install using the product key from the download site and had the same problem.

Also tried the key from TP5 but that did not work either. Only way to get it to work was to boot from the installation disc and click on „do not have a product key“ link to make progress. If you try to run setup from the boot disc, you don’t even get the option to click the „do not have product key“ link, you just get stuck. Clearly Microsoft has a problem with their information on the download site, or with the software that checks the product key.

Given that all of these posts are less than a day old, maybe this has something to do with some recent updates. Add me to the list with the same problem. Using „I do not have a key“ lets you complete the install, but still running into other things that won’t work like any sort of personalization once the image is booted up.

I called MS to inform them and get a proper key and gave up after 45 minutes on hold and a tech that could not speak proper English.

I hate to sound a certain way, but you know what: why are companies hiring people I can’t understand? I give up and hang up? Is that saving money somehow?
