The Chance Editor lane is hidden by default and can be shown by clicking on its toggle button on the left. To help you locate the probability marker belonging to a MIDI note that may be stacked vertically with others, Live highlights the probability marker for whichever note your mouse is hovering over.

Probability values can also be entered manually by first selecting the probability marker, then typing the numerical value on the computer keyboard and pressing the Enter key. Holding the Shift key allows fine-tuning the values of selected probability markers. To randomize probability values, first click in the Chance Editor lane. This will change the Randomize Range slider to a percent value. Clicking on the Randomize button will then randomize probability values for selected notes or notes with selected markers , depending on the focused lane.

The Randomize Range slider, at the right of the Randomize button, allows specifying a randomization range that can be applied to probability values. Probability values will be randomly increased or decreased by a value between zero and the number shown in the Randomize Range slider.

When multiple notes or a range of time are selected in the MIDI Note Editor, Note Stretch markers will appear, allowing notes to be scaled proportionally in time. The markers are a pair of downward-pointing indicators that snap to the beginning and end of the selection. By clicking and dragging one of the markers horizontally, the selected notes will move and stretch so that they continue to occupy the same proportion of time that they did when they were initially selected. Dragging this stretches or compresses the material between the fixed markers without affecting the material outside of them.

The pseudo stretch marker has the same grid snapping behavior as fixed markers. Unlinked clip envelopes are not affected. Unlike cropping audio clips see 8. The Deactivate Note s command will mute the note, making it appear gray in the display. Press 0 again to reactivate notes.

You can de- or reactivate all of the notes in a single key track at once by clicking a key on the piano roll and pressing 0. This helps you to see melodic and rhythmic relationships between different clips when creating and refining musical ideas, and allows you to edit material across separate tracks and scenes more quickly. In addition to editing notes across multiple clips, you can also modify various parameters for the selected clips. Note that multi-clip editing works differently depending on whether you are working in the Session or Arrangement View.

These differences are explained in dedicated sections for the Session View see Focus Mode allows you to select a single clip to edit while viewing multiple clips. Focus Mode can be toggled via the Focus button or the N keyboard shortcut. Holding N while editing with the mouse toggles Focus Mode momentarily. Multi-clip editing functions differently depending on whether Focus Mode is enabled or not.

If multiple clips of different lengths are selected, the MIDI Note Editor will show as many loop iterations as necessary for the clips to realign. While multi-clip editing is useful for looking at clips across different tracks, it can also come in handy when you need to compare and edit multiple clips within the same track.

For example, you can create evolving pattern progressions by adding notes to a clip, then making a variation to the clip in the following scene and so on, while maintaining an overview of the other clips in the track.

In the Arrangement View, it is possible to select and view MIDI clips from up to eight tracks, across a selection of time. The MIDI Note Editor will not show silence before or after the selection of clips — instead, it will fit its display range to show the beginning of the first clip up to the end of the last clip in the selection.

If the selection contains looped and unlooped clips, the Loop button will appear half colored. To smoothly change the time-zoom level, click and drag vertically in the time ruler.

Drag horizontally in the time ruler to scroll from left to right. Click and drag vertically in the note ruler to change which octaves are shown, or drag horizontally to change the vertical zoom size of MIDI notes and the keyboard.

Then, double-click on the note ruler or time ruler to automatically zoom in on your selection. If nothing is selected, double-clicking the note ruler will zoom in on the area from the lowest to the highest note in the clip, while double-clicking the time ruler will zoom out to show the time between the first and last note. It always shows the complete contents of the selected MIDI clip.

The black rectangular outline represents the part of the clip that is currently displayed in the Editor above. You can use the Right key to preview the sound over and over again, Up and Down to navigate through the list, and the Left key to move to the above folder.

Recommended: How To Sample Music. You have to remember that Ableton Live was originally predominantly a live performance tool, so the Global Quantization is set to 1 bar by default. You can customize this by adjusting the settings in the top left of the interface. A new feature of Live 10 is the ability to adjust the width and height of tracks so they fit all content on the one screen.

No matter if you use Session or Arrangement View, you can show and hide certain elements of the tracks depending on what you use. The same goes for the devices you use. Double click on the name of any device or plugin to turn it into a minimised version. On the topic of folding you can do the same with the MIDI editor, only showing the keys that currently have notes on them.

This works great for Drum Racks, where typically only a certain range of notes are used. Grooves are at the heart of many different genres, and Ableton definitely built their software with those styles in mind. The two wavy lines denote the groove pool to the bottom left of the screen — this is where any grooves you use in your project will be displayed. You can then add grooves in a number of ways, however, the best way is to drag a.

Personally, the MPC 16 swing presets are my favourite for that old-school house feel. They allow you to trigger all clips on a row at once. This is great if you want to work on an A and B section separately and see how they flow into each other.

Dropouts are the bane of any producers existence, so this will likely be a frequent task for you. Activate the Draw Tool by pressing B or by clicking the pencil icon in the top right of the Ableton interface. Now note creation and deletion is just one simple click, and drawing automation in manually is simple! Music production often requires listening to the same section over and over again to get a good idea of what your track sounds like.

This is where the Loop Switch comes in handy. Now playback will loop in that section until you deactivate it by pressing it again. This one is relatively simple. This fixes that problem. Following off the back of effect and instrument racks, you can easily save presets for your Ableton Live devices. These Ableton tips require a little more know-how, and to some the may seem basic, while to others they may seem advanced.

Producers love to layer sounds. The issue is, having notes spread out between instruments and sounds can get pretty confusing. Luckily, Live has a great way of dealing with this. To quickly switch between clips, there is a long bar at the top of the editor, which you can hover over and click to edit that clip.

To customize them, hit the L in the bottom left corner with a clip selected — this brings up the launch options. You can change the length of time between triggers, the types of triggers and even have two options to choose between, depending on the ratio.

Just make sure you load up loops and samples in some sort of order and start tweaking. If you always like to have a few things in place before you begin your sessions, then make sure to create a template. Great if you have different starting points for different styles etc. This one is especially cool for Suite users. Ableton has a bunch of packs you can download, many for free and some paid.

If you have a custom place for them, click the Custom Folder option and navigate to where you have them. Live has some great built-in tools, but many of you are probably using third-party plugins. In which case, the default of having only one plugin window open at any time may frustrate you quite a bit.

When it comes to automation, most producers resort to drawing it in. But recording parameter movements in real-time can be a creative way to get organic movement in your tracks. Simply hit record in the transport section up the top and move knobs, whether with your mouse or with a MIDI controller.

Thankfully, Live 10 makes your automation curves nice and smooth. Full-on freedom. There are three options for incoming audio to a track like a microphone or routed from another track. In , Auto or Off. You can also do the same when exporting your audio — simply adjust the sample rate in the export settings dialogue. Live will create a new audio file for the new version, and you can edit is as desired from there on in.

You can use the left and right arrow keys to navigate radio buttons anywhere in Live. If you are navigating radio buttons on a device that is inside of a Rack with the left and right arrow keys, you can get back to moving between devices in the Rack using the left and right arrow keys by hitting the ESC key. In Session and Arrangement View, the Monitor radio buttons now have a default state that can be restored. This option is also accessible via the Edit menu option Return to Default.

When enabled, certain MIDI control message types that are not automated for a given clip will automatically reset at the start of a new clip. Added support for keyboard shortcuts on French keyboard layouts for macOS versions Keyboard shortcuts that have numbers can be accessed without having to press Shift to access the number keys.

Introduced linked-track editing see 6. Linked-track editing makes it possible to use comping workflows and other phase-locked editing operations on multiple tracks at once.

Any tracks in the Arrangement View can now be linked so that their content can be edited simultaneously. There can be multiple instances of linked tracks in a Set, however each track can only belong to one of these instances. The Expression Control device now allows assigning an additional parameter as a mapping target. All Max for Live devices have been moved inside the application bundle previously, they lived in the Core Library , to ensure that using Collect All and Save will not create redundant copies of the devices.

When Max fails to load, an error message will be displayed that contains a link to a Knowledge Base article that explains potential causes for the issue and steps to take to resolve it.

A new Scale Mode see 8. By default, key tracks belonging to the selected scale are highlighted in the MIDI Note Editor, and the root note is indicated by a prominent highlight in the piano roll. A new Chance Editor see It is now possible to see and edit a velocity range, from which a velocity value is selected when a note is played.

In the Notes tab, a Velocity Range slider see If no markers are selected, values for all notes will be randomized. The Velocity and Chance Editor lanes can be shown or hidden via the lane selector toggle buttons at the left.

When enabled, drawing MIDI notes is constrained to one single key track or pitch at a time, while holding the ALT key allows freehand melodic drawing. The lowest dot in a meter lights up in a blue color if per-note controller changes pass that meter. The new Focus button enables Focus Mode see Focus Mode can be toggled via the N keyboard shortcut. The Invert button is now enabled in the Notes tab when at least one note is selected, and it is possible to invert selected notes from multiple clips at the same time.

Time selection interactions, note selection interactions, and new note editing options have been added to multi-clip editing. Also some parameters for Hybrid Reverb have been rearranged for easier navigation. Holding B while editing with the mouse temporarily toggles Draw Mode. Drawing creates steps as wide as the visible grid, which you can modify using a number of handy shortcuts see 6.

Holding down the Shift modifier while dragging vertically allows you to adjust the automation value of a step at a finer resolution. With Draw Mode off, the envelope display looks and works differently. The line segments and the breakpoints connecting them become draggable objects. When hovering over a time selection, handles appear around the outer edges of the selection. Clicking and dragging these handles allows you to transform the selected automation in the following ways:.

If your automation envelope has a large amount of breakpoints, e. Simplify Envelope calculates the optimal number of breakpoints needed to represent the selected automation envelope, and removes any unnecessary breakpoints, replacing them with straight lines or curved segments where appropriate. Automation shapes can help you quickly create complex rhythmic automation patterns, as well as more subtle, slow-paced movements like swells, builds and drops.

There are several predefined automation shapes that you can apply to a time selection. There are two types of automation shapes. When inserted, these shapes will be scaled horizontally to the time selection and vertically to the automated parameter range. If there is no time selection, the shapes will be scaled horizontally to the current grid size. In the bottom row of available shapes are two sets of ramps, and an ADSR shape.

These shapes behave slightly differently than those on the top row. When inserted, they will link up to the value of the automation before or after the selection, as indicated by their dotted line. When moving Arrangement View clips, Live normally moves all automation with the clip. Sometimes, you might want to lock the envelopes to the song position rather than to the clips, and the Lock Envelopes switch does just that.

When working with automation data in the Arrangement View, several Edit menu commands behave differently depending on whether or not your selection is within the clip track or its automation lanes. Cut, Copy, Duplicate or Delete commands applied to an envelope selection within a single lane will only apply to this envelope.

The clip itself and other automation that occurs in that time selection will be unaffected. You can also work with envelopes in multiple lanes simultaneously. If you want your edits to apply to both the clip and all of its associated envelopes, ensure the Lock Envelopes switch is disabled and apply edit commands to a selection in the clip track. Note that Live allows you to copy and paste envelope movements not only from one point in time to another, but also from one parameter to another.

Since the parameters may be completely unrelated, this can have unexpected but possibly interesting results.
